PANEL DEBATE: The future of Sweden’s securities settlement

Europe’s CSD space is under transformation from national monopolies to open-market competition, with the four big Nordic markets split between the Euroclear and Euronext groups. Then, in this context, so many trends are rolling in:

  • the settlement discipline regime just went live
  • the pan-European T2S platform is on track for implementation, in an effort to unify capital markets
  • the trends towards harmonization is challenging the regional specialty: the segregated account structure
  • the idea of shortening the settlement cycle to T+1 is gaining momentum,
  • on the horizon, distributed ledger technology could promise/threaten to replace pretty much the whole thing
  • we maybeat an inflection point in history, where we may have to reconsider our positions in many areas

Get on top of all that is going on, and get a glimpse of the future Swedish settlement scene that is taking shape.

As earlier sessions have covered, the train towards pan-European competition and increasing consolidation among CSDs has begun to roll. This puts traditional CSDs in a new role where they are simultaneously local and global providers. In this session, top leaders of Euronext Securities, which includes the CSDs in Oslo and Copenhagen, discuss what they and the participants of their markets can expect in the years to come.

PANEL DEBATE: Clearing is hot – so what’s in it for you?

The EU’s equivalence for UK CCPs was just extended to June 2025 – but with an explicit ambition to let EU-based colleagues take over their importance in the meantime. So what’s up next for the clearers and their clients? What struggles lie ahead, and who stand to win or lose? Meanwhile, the industry is getting accustomed to the increasingly central role that clearing has come to play, under various regulations, including the “UMR”. So what gains do we see? Then also: Where should CCP interoperability be going?

FIRESIDE CHAT: Is the move to clearing now being driven by economics rather than regulation? How will CCPs meet growing demand for efficient capital and margin optimisation?

Over the past decade, the clearing landscape has been transformed, with CCP innovation leading to improvements in the capital and funding requirements for clearing, better customer protection and integrated workflows that enable efficient management of all types of risk. So, is the move to clearing still being driven by regulation? Or has it become an economic choice? And how will CCPs meet growing demand for capital and margin optimisation?

KEYNOTE: “Front-to-back” – in reality

Bringing the settlement process and securities inventory into the real-time eye-sight of trading firms is an objective that has been high on the operational agenda through the last years. This requires integration not least between custodians and system providers along the trade lifecycle. The session looks at the example of J.P. Morgan’s Securities Services, whose collaboration with SimCorp serves to enable trade enrichment and workflow integration for mutual clients – which in turn should improve their settlement while reducing risks and costs.

The mandatory buy-ins were postponed but the cash penalties for settlement fails are now live. Let’s look at what volumes we see, and how they are managed by the market actors and by the infrastructure organisations  tasked with calculating and performing payment of penalties.

PANEL DEBATE: Making faster smarter – How to navigate the trend towards T+1 settlement

In the US, the central securities depository DTCC leads a determined campaign to shorten the settlement cycle for equity trade, from a T+2 basis to T+1. Across the many nations of Europe, a similar move would take a lot of coordination but still seems to be the direction things are going. This session discusses what it means for infrastructures, and how market participants should prepare to maximise the benefits and minimise the hassles.

FIRESIDE CHAT: Getting the digital assets environment interconnected enough for institutional investment

The multitude of competing technology platforms are one of the forces that hold market infrastructures and participants back from working with tokenised assets. Yet, initiatives including a recent one by SWIFT/SETL and others, seek to create an integrated market by making major DLT environments interoperable enough. Will they make it, if so when, and how does it mean we should act in our operations?

PANEL DEBATE: Trends in the Swedish fund industry: mergers, acquisitions and closures and how they impact operations

Pressure from increased competition, reduced fees, increased regulatory challenges, increased technology costs and shifting product demand are driving an accelerated and urgent review of the way the asset management industry is structured. This session will explore where the Swedish fund industry is now and where it might be heading in future and consider how this impact investment operations.

  • Above trends and the pandemic have driven an acceleration of M&A and closure activity in the Swedish fund company market
  • The reform to the Swedish Premium Pension System (PPM) has further accelerated the consolidation trend, as fund companies seek to create greater scale in order to defend their existing AUM
  • Creating a multi-asset multi-boutique structure vs  combining a best-in-class product set with a strong distribution channel
  • At the operations level, duplication in the market creating high long-term bottom line cost overhang
  • Acquiring managers are challenged with inheriting different forms of operating models with different service providers – streamlining these and remaining competitive when new asset managers are rapidly growing with a model they just built on a blank sheet of paper with the latest technology

PANEL DEBATE: Automated fund orders – less effort, more flexibility

Email and fax are lovely tools … but not necessarily for communication of fund transactions. While Sweden’s financial firms are very innovative in the market, a large number still handle fund transactions manually with all the unnecessary workload, cost and operational risk that follows. Also, the automation add multiple valuable capabilities in fund distribution. This panel discusses what a service for automated fund transaction management does, and what it takes to get it fully implemented in the industry.
